Jaye Street Bridge Widening & Street Improvement Project

City of Porterville | Jaye Street Bridge | 2016 -2018



VSCE provided construction management and resident engineering services for a $7M bridge widening and street improvement project for the City of Porterville. The project was funded by federal funds administered by Caltrans Local Assistance and consisted the widening of the existing Jaye Street Bridge from two lanes to four lanes, including reconstruction of the street approaches. The project was in the central portion of the City along South Jaye Street, crossing over the Tule River. The existing bridge consists of a reinforced flat slab superstructure supported by 18” diameter columns made up of seven spans with a total length of approximately 242 feet. The bridge widening consisted of a reinforced flat slab superstructure supported with the 18” columns. The project also consisted of two retaining walls to support a walking trail beneath the bridge, driven steel piles supported the retaining and abutment walls. The new 18” columns of the bridge widening are supported by 30” CISS piles within an active riverbed. Existing roadway and intersections on both ends of the project called for complete reconstruction including new ADA compliant sidewalk and bus infrastructure. VSCE was responsible for the full scope of construction management that includes construction administration in accordance with Caltrans LAPM, quality assurance, and inspection of field activities, management of project finances, control of project budget and schedule, resolution of day-to-day issues and coordination with the utility agencies, design team, City of Porterville, and the public. Project was completed with less than 10% in contract change orders. The majority of the changes were owner initiated to address design corrections and improve the access to the local public.
